Preparing Your Pet for Dental / Oral Surgery
at Pet Specialists of Hawaii

Dental and oral surgeries are important procedures that can significantly improve your pet’s comfort, health, and quality of life. At Pet Specialists of Hawaii, we want to ensure a smooth and safe experience for both you and your pet. Please review the following guidelines to help you prepare.

To ensure your pet’s safety under anesthesia, do not feed your pet after midnight the night before surgery. Water may be allowed until a few hours prior to the procedure—our team will provide specific instructions based on your pet’s needs.

Some medications may need to be adjusted or temporarily discontinued before surgery. Please follow the specific instructions provided by our team. If your pet is on regular medications—such as those for pain, heart disease, or seizures—be sure to check with us in advance so we can ensure the safest plan for your pet’s procedure.

Transport your pet in a secure carrier or on a leash for their safety. To help minimize stress, maintain a calm and quiet environment at home before the appointment. Providing gentle reassurance can help your pet feel more comfortable leading up to their procedure.

Please also bring the following items with you on the day of surgery:

  • Any medications your pet is currently taking
  • 2–3 meals of their regular food for recovery
  • An e-collar, if your pet already has one

These items help us provide consistent care and support a smoother recovery for your pet.
